Introduction

At LeadTruffle, we take SMS compliance seriously to ensure that our customers stay protected while maximizing lead engagement. This article outlines how we handle SMS compliance, why opt-out messaging is required, and how we optimize for both compliance and conversions.

Why SMS Compliance Matters

SMS regulations, such as the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and carrier guidelines, require that businesses provide an opt-out option in any non-personal text message. Failure to include an opt-out method can result in message filtering, fines, or legal risks for both LeadTruffle and our customers.

Our SMS messages fall into a gray area between Transactional (e.g., shipping updates) and Promotional (e.g., marketing to drive purchases). Because of this, we must include opt-out language in the initial SMS to remain compliant.

How We Implement SMS Compliance

1. Consent Before SMS Initiation

We include clear consent language on our website chat widget where users provide their phone number. We do not require an additional checkbox for SMS consent, as this would reduce form conversions and limit lead capture.

2. Opt-Out Message in the First SMS

Every initial SMS includes "Reply STOP to unsubscribe." or similar language. This keeps us compliant with regulations and ensures leads can opt out easily if they are not interested.

3. Optimized First SMS for Engagement

While we include opt-out messaging, we also optimize the first message to feel natural and engaging, not transactional.

Does the Opt-Out Message Hurt Conversions?

We’ve reviewed customer concerns that the "Reply STOP to unsubscribe" language may discourage potential leads. However, our data suggests otherwise. On average 70% of leads engage with LeadTruffle's initial text, so we believe the opt-out message is not a significant deterrent.

Final Thoughts

SMS compliance is crucial, but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of conversions. LeadTruffle ensures full compliance while optimizing for engagement, making sure our customers get the best possible results. If you have concerns or ideas for improvement, we’re happy to collaborate on compliant, high-converting solutions!
